Mariam's Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmeh)

1 jar soaked and rinsed grape leaves
1 lb hamburger
1 whole chopped onion
3 whole lemons
2 cups uncooked white rice
1 cup uncooked yellow split peas
sugar
1 bunch parsley
1/2 bunch mint
1 bunch fresh or dried tarragon
salt/pepper
saffron
tumeric

    COOKING SAUCE:
    saffron
    1/2 cup lemon juice
    2-3 tbsp sugar

Soak and rinse grape leaves well (take care not to tear them). Cook rice & split peas with a little water.

Brown meat w/onion and spices then combine with rice/peas mixture. Wrap meat mixture in grape leaves and pack tightly together in skillet. Add 3/4 cup water and 1 Tbsp cooking oil and cover & cook over low heat until water evaporates.

Heat ingredients for sauce until sugar dissolves and pour evenly all over stuffed grape leaves. Close lid and cook 30 minutes more. Cool to room temperature. (Note: It's good to make extra sauce to pour over the grape leaves. Can be reheated in microwave.)
